Welcome to India!
A multi-lingual, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-multi country with 28 states and counting, the Indian subcontinent is a nation which is as diverse as anything can get. Yes, we have a national language, a national animal, a national bird, a national sport, a national this, that and everything like every other nation but these are not very national or common. If there is anything that binds this disparate nation, then that is cinema and cricket. Cinema is not merely Indian but a global phenomenon. Motion pictures are globally made as a source of entertainment, education and is also a powerful mode of communication. Acknowledging and appreciating cinema is a ceremony that has been existing for a long time and one of the most prominent and most watched film awards ceremony is the Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars.

The Oscars, the American Academy Awards ceremony which recognizes excellence in film making in the whole wide world!! (Whole wide?? ). This reminds me of the Baseball World Series, a championship series played between the American League of one part of the world and National League of probably the same part of the world. (World Series??, whole wide world??) The Oscars belong to the whole wide world of America where the small, insignificant rest of the world is invited to bask in the american glory. Indian cinema at the Oscars can be compared to a child, awestruck and mouth agape peeping through a window the ostentatious display of whole wide american excellence in cinema, when its talent is being admired and acclaimed globally. But the child only wants a small piece of the american pie, like aamir khan who only goes to Oscars and is never seen at a Filmfare event, like the disappointment we see whenever an Indian Film does not make it to the Oscars even if it does, it does not win the coveted award. Let us hope the child get its share of glory in the coming years.

That being said, cricket is one uniting religion in this country which has sachin, dravid, ganguly, dhoni treated as Gods and demigods.. Though the number of cricket playing nations are less, cricket is loved as a universal sport. Unlike the Baseball world series, cricket is soon to witness its once in four years carnival, the ICC World Cup. World cup has always been a spectacular event since its inception in 1975. But lately this event is losing its charm with the increasing number of teams. This year world cup is hosting an unbearable 16 teams and the period is being inflated to 47 days, three weeks more than the soccer world cup. Though the event begins on march 13th, there isn't a single match of real excitement until the super-8 series which starts on march 27th. Unlike soccer, cricket is not a game where we can expect major upsets, a kenya surprising the westindies or a bangladesh numbing pakistan is a rarity in cricket. Cricket is a long game and the gap is too wide for an upset. I feel a India versus Bermuda match is like a boxer warming up by practising his punches on a meat bag before the main event. Its all in the game and like every Indian even I am eagerly waiting for the world cup and hope that Team India wins the world cup!! Good luck India.. Good luck for Cricket, Cinema, world cup, Oscars and everything that unites us!!

Greetings!
Off late I see myself drifted towards the world of music. Music has always interested me but it was only limited to the likes of listening and appreciating. I have never made a daring or rather foolish attempt to create my own music or replicate someone else's. That being the history, my newfound interest to create or play my own music started when one of my close friends regarded my insouciant braying (something that i don't do in public fearing charges under public nuisance!!) as singing. As Mark Twain put it, "We are always more anxious to be distinguished for the talent that we don't possess than to be praised for the 15 talents we do possess" that dazzling form of eulogy left me overwhelmed, astonished and curious. My curiosity got better off in me and put me in a situation where I started thinking and believing, what if?? what if there's an Atif Aslam or a Bryan Adams hidden in me!! Without any further thought I decided to bring out the long hidden talent in me in the form of a guitar!! A close friend of mine who still wants to believe out of all odds that there is somewhere a little bit of sanity left in me gifted me a wonderful guitar and here I am excited and ready to traverse the world of music!!

Now with the guitar in my hand and a world to conquer, I immediately joined a new batch of guitar classes which began around the same time my curiosity for music arose.(A strange coincidence!) After attending two or three sessions, all I could manage to do was to sit on my ass(american!) like an ass(british) and try to comprehend everything thats happening around. Those sessions have surely prompted me to play some rock music (music played with rocks to be more precise) and I have been a constant source of forced entertainment to people at home. "Music makes one feel so romantic - at least it always gets on one's nerves - which is the same thing nowadays." as quoted by Oscar Wilde, seems to be true in my case. Though the start has been a bit shaky and my desperate attempts to play something that can be called as music falling on deaf ears, my determination has not wavered and I am still up and ready to take the challenge. As they say, "Rome was not built in a day" great cities and great artist take their time to shine!! Soon the curiosity that has put me here will transform into a hobby, hobby would rise to passion and finally passion reaching the level of obsession. Time will only be the witness to all this..

That being the significant part of things happening with me, today is Saint Valentine's day. A day to express love. Love, one of the few things but a significant one which makes us human, which can be beautiful, bitter, wonderful, woeful and many more things to us. Love is one emotion in us which is certainly enduring. Love lasts for a lifetime. This day always brings back the memories of the good old age of adoloscence. One of the anecdotes I always remember was when I was studying in tenth, the owner of a gifts and novelties shop visited our headmaster to express his gratitude for the great sale he could do on valentine's day thanks to our school students. The next day our headmaster delivered a firing and uninspiring speech on how disappointed he was and all the restrictions he is planning to impose. Those were the days when love was novel and refreshingly new emotion. Since then love has grown, love has taken various forms. But love is one feeling which is not be concealed or treasured. Love is to be expressed. Love for friends, family. When you love someone, show it!! So when it comes to love, everyday has to be a Valentine's day.. Happy Valentine's day. God Bless!!
